An open letter to Umno's newly-appointed state chiefs

An open letter to Umno's newly-appointed state chiefs
From being an ordinary Umno member, you now head your state political machinery. At the state level, you have reached the peak of the political ladder, a feat that offers opportunities and pitfalls.
But as a politician, such challenges are what keep you going. You now helm Malacca Umno, a task that demands better time management on your part. If done properly, this shouldn't be too difficult.
You need to learn from your predecessors, and Malacca has produced state liaison leaders with considerable success over the years. Saudara Idris, you are one phone-call away from your elders, should you need their wisdom.
Your appointment was announced on Friday by your boss, party president Datuk Seri Najib Razak. As you are aware, your boss also announced the appointments of new state leaders for Perlis, Kedah, Selangor, Johor and Federal Territory.
Apart from being chief minister, you now have duties that will demand more creativity and astute political manoeuvring. This is a more difficult challenge than that posed in running the state.
At the state government level, you will be assisted by a bureaucracy that has been in place for decades. They know their duties, they have their own general orders and standard operating procedures.
But, at the political end, you will face individuals who have vested interests.
Your task would be to get them to function as a team, especially now that that the political landscape has changed in the last few years.
Malacca is not a big state. Your predecessor, Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, did very well and left you a state that is thriving and pushing forward confidently.
You need not follow Ali's style of administration every step of the way. Ali is a popular grassroots leader, something which you may want to emulate.
The stories of Ali accepting every wedding invitation on weekends are well known. Such was Ali's engagement with ordinary folks.
Saudara, you will face the next general election in about five years. Maybe four years.
This means you don't have that much time to prepare.
The opposition started to push the envelope as soon as the last election was over.
This means you need to start your game plan as soon as possible. I wish you luck.
I don't have to remind you that the voters are looking for dynamic leadership. Every promise you made must be delivered.
The voters' expectations are high, which means you will be under everyone's scrutiny.
Voters have become increasingly discerning, I'm sure you know that. If you keep your eyes open, your ears to the ground and your head level, you will be able to captain the state well.
Your new colleagues, whose appointments were also announced at the same time, will face similar situations. I see a very big challenge for Datuk Seri Noh Omar, who has taken over from Najib as Selangor Umno chief.
Noh has a far more challenging job. It will not be a walk in the park for Noh. He has no government post to distract or back him. This can be a challenge and an opportunity. He will need all the help he can get if he is to have a serious chance of wresting the state from the opposition.
It's good for Noh to lead Selangor Umno, leaving his predecessor to concentrate on running the whole country instead of just one state. Najib was Noh's predecessor.
Another leader who has been given this big task is Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir.
He now leads Kedah Umno, having won the state from the opposition and is now the menteri besar. Mukhriz has one major helper in the form of his father, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Saudara Idris, today's politics has changed. You, having been in the game long enough, know this well. Tomorrow's politics will be won by strong articulation, a well-oiled machinery, focused leadership and genuine programmes to help the rakyat.
Everyone will be watching you and your newly appointed colleagues. I wish all of you luck. You will need lots of it."
