BN leaders disagree with Shahrizat

Political secretaries must be appointed based on capability and suitability, not gender, BN leaders tell Shahrizat.
PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional leaders have disagreed with Umno Wanita chief Shahrizat Abdul Aziz who yesterday urged the Cabinet to appoint female political secretaries. According to her, this move will be in line with the government’s program to further empower women.
Several BN leaders today said that appointments to any position should not be gender specific. It must be done on the lines of “capability, merit and suitability”.
MP for Labis, Chua Tee Yong told FMT that “it is a suggestion to try to get more women involved in the political scenario, but we must take note that empowering women should be on merit basis and not agenda basis.”
“I don’t think we should set something like this. It makes it difficult for the minister or his deputy who may already have somebody in mind for the position (a male) but renders him unsuitable just because he is not a female” he added.
Meanwhile, Kedah Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang said that the statement made by Shahrizat “should be considered by the government but it was ‘not safe’ to say political secretaries must be women”.
“Some ministers may be comfortable with having female secretaries, some are not for certain purposes, it all depends,” he said.
“The appointment must be based on capability. It can be considered, but need not be followed by all ministries,” he added.
Tan used the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development as an example to elaborate his point.
“Obviously if the ministry appoints a woman (as political secretary) then that is right, we cannot have a male in charge. It would be awkward,” he said, pointing to Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s short stint as Women’s Affairs Minister.
“Najib held onto it for certain reasons. So, in this case, Shahrizat has to reflect upon herself as to what is her agenda for saying that? Is there a need to champion women rights or toe on the lines of suitability?” he asked.
“Political secretaries do not only do secretarial work. It is different. We have to see their suitability depending on several factors and related fields.”

Shahrizat is a hypocrite
Meanwhile, Cheras Umno division chief Syed Ali Alhabshee, called Shahrizat a hypocrite for not appointing a female political secretary during her stint as Women, Family and Community Development minister.
“When she was a minister, she herself did not appoint a female political secretary. Now that she is no longer in Cabinet, she is urging for women to be elected in line with Najib’s transformation program,” he said.
“Therefore, it is funny that she is calling for the appointment of women when she herself, neglected women,” he added.
Syed Ali said Shahrizat should have elected female political secretaries while she was a minister if she wanted her footsteps to be followed.
“When you no longer have a place in Cabinet and are no longer a representative of the people, the suggestion will be made a laughing matter,” he said.
Moreover, Syed Ali said Shahrizat has indeed failed as the chief of Umno’s women wing. “Not a single woman from Umno was elected into the cabinet by Najib. This is shameful for Umno Wanita. It is a fact and it’s neither slander nor made up.”
