CSMU must comply with MMC criteria, says Subra

The Crimea State Medical University (CSMU) in Ukraine must comply with the Malaysian Medical Council's (MMC) requirements in order to gain recognition for its medical programme.

NONEHealth Minister Dr S Subramaniam said the university must rectify the areas of concern which were raised by MMC's panel in 2005.

MMC's review of the programme last year found that these weakness had yet to be addressed, he added.

"Once CSMU has rectified these areas of concerns, they can invite MMC to review the status again," he said in a statement in Kuala Lumpur today, without elaborating details of the said areas.

In June, Subramaniam had announced the review of the medical programme offered by CSMU in Ukraine, which was withdrawn from the second schedule of the Medical Act 1971.

"MMC's policy is very clear. It will only deal directly with the university and not agents or non government organisations representing the interests of the university or the students," he noted.
Approval withdrawn

On Aug 7, 2001, CSMU received the approval to offer a medical study programme but later many complaints were received with regards to the institution and the performance of its graduates.

The cabinet supported the withdrawal of CSMU's recognition by MMC in 2005, but to ensure it would not affect Malaysian students there, the decision only involved those registered after Dec 31, 2005.

However, during a re-evaluation visit last October following several requests by CSMU, the panel discovered that no action had been taken on the serious weaknesses pointed out earlier.
