Dad asks cops, is it wrong to support my son?

Abdul Halim Abdul Hamid has asked if there it was wrong for him to support his student activist son, Adam Adli, after police hauled him up for questioning.

kuala lumpur vigil for adam 200513 adam father abdul halim abdul hamidAbdul Halim (left) had on the night of June 24 participated in a candlelight vigil outside the Jinjang police detention centre after his son and 31 other activists were detained there.

"Every time people gather peacefully, they would be accused of wrongdoing," he told journalists after giving his statement to the police outside the Sentul police station yesterday.

"I went to give moral support, not only to my son but to the other activists. Is it an offence to support our friends and the rakyat?"

On the afternoon of June 24, Adam and more than 100 others had protested outside Parliament and sought to hand over a memorandum to protest alleged electoral fraud, but several of themwere arrested after a scuffle broke out with police.

MP summoned too

NONEBayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin was also summoned by the police to give his statement. Both men spent about one hour at the police station for their statements to be recorded.
Speaking to journalists at around 2.30pm yesterday, Sim said the investigation relates to the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 and described the police action as a form of harassment.

"I think it would be best for the police to focus on combatting crime," he said.

The duo were accompanied by lawyer Michelle Yesudas and Adam Adli (photo above, right).

NONEPrior to this, two other participants at the candlelight vigil - student activists Mandeep Singh and political aide Rozan Azen Mat Rasip - were also quizzed on the same matter on July 4.

"We just kept repeating that we will answer whatever questions in court if we are charged, but it appeared the police were trying to find out the person responsible for the vigil," Rozan said when contacted.

He added that the matter was being investigated based on a report the police lodged themselves after the detainees were released around midnight on June 25.
