Don’t blame Finas, FCB approved ‘The New Village’

Datuk Mustapha Maarof has urged all parties not to blame The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) for approving the screening of the movie "The New Village", which was said to glorify communism.
According to the Finas’ Compulsory Screening Scheme chairman, they only carried out routine procedure by fixing a date for the film to be shown in the cinemas.
“We did not approve the film. Our job is just to set the date after it has been approved by the Film Censorship Board (FCB),” he told The Malaysian Insider.
“I don’t understand why anyone would want to make this non-issue, into an issue. As I have said, we did not approve the file. You should be asking the parties responsible, not us.”
Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said that it was unfair to judge the movie "The New Village", which is set to be screened nationwide on August 22, based just on the trailer.
According to the Multimedia and Communications minister, certain parties were out to create controversy only after watching the trailer, which did not portray the entire movie line.
“This is the same controversy which hit "Tanda Putera" before because the public jumped to a conclusion only after watching the trailer in the Internet,” he told The Malaysian Insider.
Shabery said the controversy which hit the two movies were because of the last election period to avoid sensitive issues from being used as a model in the election campaign.
He said Tanda Putera was approved but they decided to choose a later date to be screened in conjunction with the National Day celebration.
“Both films have their own problems before screening because the production of the films had already been completed since 2012.
“I haven’t seen 'The New Village', hence it is unfair for me to make any comments about this film. But since it has been approved by the Home Ministry, then there should be a rationale behind this approval,” he said.
Shabery said there were no racial issues which were brought up in the movie "Tanda Putera". He said DAP had themselves created issues and he urged DAP leaders to watch the film before jumping to conclusions.
“I know DAP had asked that "Tanda Putera" be aired because they no longer made any complaints. I too have asked Finas to give an explanation on 'The New Village',” explained Shabery, adding that the film censorship affairs were under the Home Ministry.
Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia today, through its columnist Awang Selamat, accused "The New Village" of rewriting history by glorifying communism and urged the producer not to forget his or her roots.
He said the film was an effort to recognise the communists' fight, including the Malayan Communist Party secretary-general Chin Peng.
Besides that, Awang criticised the government as "The New Village" movie was approved by Finas compared with "Tanda Putera" which has not been screened yet.
"The New Village" is directed by Wong Kew Lit and produced by Astro Shaw. There is no Malay or Indian cast in the production.
The movie also showcases the actions of the British against the Chinese during the Emergency period in Malaya's history. The film also focuses on the Malayan People Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA) as freedom fighters.
