DPM: PAS candidate more interested in business than representing people

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has accused the PAS candidate for the Kuala Besut seat of being more interested in becoming a businessman than being an elected representative.

Basing his claim on an Internet video of the candidate concerned, Azlan Yusof, who is known locally as Endot, Muhyiddin said Azlan had stated on record his willingness to employ workers to carry out the responsibilities of an elected representative.

"He was told to be a candidate, but he is interested in business. We cannot help but see the contradiction...priority should be given to voters and the people in the area," he told Bernama today.

Asked to comment on Azlan, who was reportedly gagged from issuing statements to the media following public knowledge of the video, Muhyiddin said, "Maybe it was a mistake, but now he is not allowed to speak about it."

He called on Kuala Besut voters to make a wise decision by choosing the candidate who wants to serve the people.

Azlan, a businessman, will be facing the BN candidate, former engineer and local boy Tengku Zaihan Che Ku Abdul Rahmanin the Kuala Besut by-election on July 24.

Meanwhile, Muhyiddin said the announcement of a housing project in Kuala Besut was not because of the by-election but had been planned a long time ago and was only awaiting allocation approval.

On another matter, Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said refuted as baseless the accusation by PAS that the state BN government had seized and dismantled houses in Kampung Lay Out, Tok Saboh to build 72 units of apartments. The project was launched by the Deputy Prime Minister last Saturday.

Responding at the same media conference, Ahmad said that when PAS administered Terengganu from 1999 to 2004, government lands were given to the people without the approval of the Land Department, whereas "the present government has to adhere to regulations on each land application...the party has no right to give out land".

Besut PAS chief Wan Azhar Wan Ahmad claimed that the housing lots were given by the Terengganu government during PAS' administration. - Bernama
