Ex-top cop files suit against media groups

Former Commercial Crimes Investigation Department director Ramli Yusuff continues his quest to clear his name by filing a defamation suit against several media publishers.

He filed a joint suit against the publishers of the New Straits Times, The Star, Berita Harian, Utusan Malaysia, Daily Express and Borneo Post.

NONEThis is over their 2007 reports over what is known as theCopgate affair, in which Ramli (right) claimed his name was smeared after he allegedly took action against a crime kingpin in Johor.

In documents made available toMalaysiakini, the suit was filed on Thursday at the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

Ramli named the New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd, Star Publications (M) Bhd, Berita Harian Sdn Bhd, Utusan Melayu Publications (M) Bhd, Sabah Publishing House Sdn Bhd, and See Hua Marketing Sdn Bhd as defendants.

Also named as defendants are the editors of the respective organisations, and reporters. All in all 16 defendants are named in the suit.

He alleged that the articles in the newspapers mentioned a senior police officer having amassed RM27 million in assets and who was asked to declare his assets, which was understood to refer to him.

This is because there were no other officers,  Ramli said, who was being investigated for abuse of power and failing to declare his assets at that time.

Ramli claimed those articles implied that he was a corrupt officer, he had failed to declare his assets, he allegedly amassed RM27 million in wealth, gathered it through illegal means and that he had abused his power.

He claimed one of the articles, which originated in Sabah, pitted him as an infamous leader of the underworld.

Articles "injure my reputation"

The former top cop also denied being involved in organised crime and abusing his powers.

Ramli further said such articles injured his reputation, character and credentials. It also brought him towards public scandal, hatred, ridicule and lowered his esteem in society.

He said the articles were not only defamatory, but were also false and malicious, directed to injure his reputation.

Ramli further alleged the publication had resulted in him to suffer moments of infamy and anxiety, and he had to call a press conference against police protocol six years' ago to clear his name.

In his suit, filed through the firm of Vin Partnerships, Ramli is seeking a non-stipulated   amount of general, special exemplary and punitive damages, interest and cost.

Ramli had been charged with several counts of not declaring his assets and alleged abuse of power, but was later cleared of all charges.

He also obtained his gratuity of RM753,000, which had been withheld after he was suspended for three months before he was due to retire in late 2007.

He had stated last year that he willfile suits against Abdul Gani, Musa and the MACC.

His counterpart and lawyer friend Rosli Dahlan (right) had already filedseveral suits against the media, and the MACC to that effect when he was dragged into the matter and also charged.
