If no-contest rule can't unseat Najib, Kuala Besut could, warns Dr M loyalist
KUALA BESUT BY-ELECTION If change in UMNO could not be effected through contest for the party's top two posts at its upcoming annual assembly, then a defeat for UMNO at the Kuala Besut by-election could.
Former New Straits Times chief editor Abdul Kadir Jasin, a staunch loyalist of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, opined that UMNO's performance at Wednesday's poll would be the final option for change.
“The hope to see UMNO change for the better through party election is thin. UMNO may only change if or when it loses the by-election,” Kadir said.
He said UMNO president Najib Razak was set to retain his post since Mahathir had strongly supported the no-contest call for the top two posts.
Najib’s deputy Muhyiddin Yassin, said Kadir, seemed to have lost his steam citing “fatigue” and “did not want himself to be seen disagreeable with all Prime Ministers.”
Kadir said while many BN leaders negotiated with Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah to challenge Najib, the latter had little chance to unseat Najib.
On the Kuala Besut by-election, Kadir said BN should not be too confident of winning because the constituency had been won by PAS before.
He recalled that BN lost the Kuala Terengganu seat to PAS in the 2008 by-election by a majority of 2,631 votes after winning it by a slim majority of 628 votes.
“It’s not impossible that the same can happen in Kuala Besut on July 24. The only advantage is the majority obtained by the late state assemblyman A Rahman Mokhtar was huge,” he added.
