KUALA BESUT BY-ELECTION PAS wants the Terengganu menteri besar post but tells voters otherwise, Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.
Ahmad Zahid said the party will change its tune if it secured the Kuala Besut seat in Wednesday's by-election.
"They say they are not going after the menteri besar post but it would be impossible they are not interested when they have the same number of seats as Barisan Nasional if they win this by election," said Ahmad Zahid at a press conference today at the police tactical centre in Kuala Besut.
A hung state assembly is possible if PAS wins the seat. Currently Barisan holds 16 seats against PAS' 15 in the 32-seat assembly
The home minister warned there will be instability in Terengganu in the event of a tie.
"There will be a hung government if this happens," he said.
BN was left with 16 seats when Kuala Besut assemblyman Dr A Rahman Mokhtar passed away due to cancer on June 26.
On a different matter, Ahmad Zahid said he will be defending the Umno vice-president post together with Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal in the coming party polls.
"I dont have better plans. We have refrained from contesting for other posts," he said, possibly alluding to the posts of president and deputy president.
Fellow vice-president Mohd Shafie had earlier announced that he would be defending his post.
