Malaysia safe from Sumatran fugitives, assure cops

The police have assured that convicts who broke out of jail in Medan, Indonesian recently would not make it through Malaysian borders.

Bukit Aman internal security and public order department director Salleh Mat Rashid said the border guards have been briefed on the incident and are on high alert.

“Malaysia is safe, Malaysia is definitely safe,” he said during a press conference at a Women Street Crime Awareness Campaign at the Great Eastern Mall in Kuala Lumpur today.

Salleh was queried by reporters on the possibility that the escaped convicts could reach Malaysian shores. Some 200 prisoners escaped from the Tanjung Gusta prison following a riot on Thursday.

According to AFP, 13 of them were convicted terrorists. Medan is about seven hours away from Penang by boat.
Security beefed up

Salleh said that the police would work with their Indonesian counterparts to ensure that they are apprehended.

“Maybe they will come to our borders, but we have security forces there, including the police and the army. We have put them on alert,” Salleh said.

Spokesperson for the north Sumatra province police force, Heru Prakoso, said the cause of the riot was a blackout and problems getting water, which fuelled the inmates' annoyance.

"Prison officials told us that the inmates then set fire to the facility and 200 managed to escape,” he was quoted as saying.

About 700 police and soldiers were deployed to regain control, and search teams were combing through Medan by night to find the fugitives.
