(The Malay Mail Online) - He is also an MIC veteran, how is he going to bring about change?
KUALA LUMPUR, July 12 — Leaders and members of the MIC are surprised with the news that former Senator Datuk Daljit Singh will be going for the party’s top post.
This comes after Daljit had criticised party president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel’s leadership as “disappointing”, “old-fashioned” and “non-democratic”, among other comments made.
The Malay Mail had reported yesterday that Daljit, who is linked to former president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, intends to create a new direction and bring fresh blood to the party.
Daljit had also said that “modernisation” was needed to infuse new blood into the party. Former MIC secretary general Datuk S. Murugesan seemed speechless upon hearing the news.
“I am very surprised with his decision to run for president. That being said, anyone can offer themselves to run for this post but it is up to the branch chairmen to nominate and vote them in,” he said.
Following Murugesan’s sentiments, MIC strategic director S. Vell Paari — who had no clue about Daljit’s intentions until yesterday — said that the news was unexpected.
“But as far as I am concerned, everyone should have the right to exercise their democratic rights within the party,” said Vell Paari.
Deputy Education Minister P. Kamanathan said he too was surprised with Daljit’s decision. He said Daljit may change his mind as the time comes closer to the election for the top MIC post.
“For him to challenge Palanivel is not the right thing to do.”
He said if Daljit wanted to attract new blood and modernise the party, there were many ways to do it.
“Challenging the party president is not one of the ways. He is also an MIC veteran and how is he going to bring about change? What will the people think? These are questions that Daljit must answer."
