MP unable to obtain Special Branch division figures

An opposition MP was unable to obtain the figures for the number of police officers who work under the Special Branch division after Parliament amended her parliamentary question.

DAP’s Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching said that even though she had requested figures for all eight police divisions in her parliamentary question, the Special Branch and Special Task Force were removed from her question.

As a result, the Home Ministry did not submit answers for the number of officers that work for these two divisions.

“My question was amended without my approval, this should not have happened,” she said during a press conference in Parliament lobby today.

“I am very interested to know the numbers because these officers do political spying,” she added.

NONEHowever, Deputy Home Minister Wan Junaidi Wan Jaafar (left) later said that whilst his ministry did not amend the question, they would not provide the details about the number of officers in the Special Branch.

“Even if you see CIA and MI6, other intelligence agencies, they don’t tell you how many people they have. Certain things we can’t disclose,” he said in a short press conference immediately after.

However, speaking from his previous experience as deputy speaker, Wan Junaidi said that the parliament secretary and the speaker both have the right to amend and edit any question.

“That is at the Parliament’s discretion,” he said.
