‘No diesel shortage’

The problem is temporary, says Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Minister Hasan Malek.
PETALING JAYA: There’s no issue of diesel shortage in Sabah, said Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Minister Hasan Malek today.
“The problem is temporary in nature. Furthermore, the diesel supply is sufficient,” he told FMT.
However, the minister contended that the purported diesel shortage crisis lies in terms of its distribution.
“There is a problem in the distribution. To solve the problem, we have revised the subsidised diesel quota,” he said.
In a statement today, the ministry meanwhile said: “The ministry has approved an additional quota of 24,196,271 litres across the country; and delivery to stations experiencing diesel shortage is currently being addressed by all oil companies.
“This amount is an addition to the previous additional amount that was approved at 25,787,500 litres,” it said.
The subsidised diesel quota stipulated by the ministry is to allocate all oil companies with a monthly quota based on the pattern of consumption.
Sabah diesel vehicle owners recently have been plagued with massive diesel shortage.
Sabah DAP publicity secretary Chan Foong Hin had said that the public deserves the right to know whether the ongoing shortage is due to the well-known smuggling of subsidised diesel or an artificial shortage created to pave way for subsidy reform.
He pointed out that the crisis is not a regional but a nationwide issue as it is also occurring in Johor, Kedah, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Sarawak, Malacca and other states.
Chan also said there are rumors alleging that the shortage was due to smuggling activities.
Nevertheless, the crisis could not be due to smuggling alone as such cases could not increase two to three-fold overnight.
Minister suspects foul play
Hasan on the other hand admitted that there is a possibility of diesel being smuggled elsewhere.
“There is a possibility that diesel is smuggled elsewhere. We do suspect there is some sort of foul play going on.
“However, we (the ministry), together with the police and customs are monitoring through static enforcement,” he said.
He stressed that the ministry, with other agencies, will be monitoring the situation to ensure that the diesel supply is sufficient and continuous.
“All stations which are experiencing shortage will get their supply by today or the latest, tomorrow.
“Hopefully, this immediate action (increased quota) undertaken by the ministry and all oil companies will help resolve the diesel shortage issue,” Hasan said.
The Kuala Pilah MP also said that he will be going to Sabah tonight to view the situation for himself.
