‘Phantom voter’ turns out to be a mad man

A man suspected to be a 'phantom voter' at the Kuala Besut by-election turns out to be mentally ill
KUALA BESUT: A suspected ‘phantom voter’ who caused a stir at a polling centre here today turned out to be a mad man.
Besut police chief Supt Kamaruddin Mohd Zakaria said it was the only report received on alleged ‘phantom voter’ at the Kuala Besut by-election today.
“Our investigation found that welder is mentally ill. He was not arrested within 500 metres of the polling centre,” he told a press conference here today.
The man was seen walking aorund Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Baharu polling centre and raised fear that he could be a ‘phantom voter.’
Vote canvassers lodged a police report after detaining the man at 2pm and
handing him over to the police.
Kamaruddin also said party supporters are not encouraged to converge on Dewan Gong Kemuntong, Jerteh tonight during vote counting because of space constraint.
The police advised them to catch the result ‘live’ on television and reminded that no victory parade was allowed.
He also confirmed that supporters of a certain party had surrounded the car of Election Commission (EC) deputy chairman Wan Ahmad Wan Omar.
They had suspected that the heavily tinted car without EC logo was ferrying ‘phantom voters.’  However, no police report was made.
