Strike a blow for Idris Jusoh, vote PAS! Husam tells K Besut voters to WISE UP
Pakatan Rakyat leaders are hopeful that they can wrest the Kuala Besut state seat from arch rival Barisan Nasional although it has been barely two months since the May 5 general election was held.
KUALA BESUT, July 12 — Former Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh will indirectly benefit from a PAS win in Kuala Besut, PAS by-election director Datuk Husam Musa (picture) said today.
According to him, current Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said’s reputation will likely be dented if the coalition loses, paving the way for his predecessor to return to the limelight.
“PAS will help them take care of Ahmad Said,” Husam told reporters, referring to Idris’ camp in Terengganu Umno.
The tiff between the two factions of Idris (picture below, seated, far right) and Ahmad is publicly known, which started after Ahmad was appointed mentri besar following Election 2008 over incumbent Idris.
Husam, who is also PAS vice-president, has described Ahmad as “a man with no political agenda”, and has failed in combating poverty in rural Kuala Besut and Terengganu.
“Before this they cannot unseat him from mentri besar because he was too strong ... With a PAS win, we get a seat, (Idris) gets political boon,” he added.
Husam today offered PAS’ Azlan Yusof as the perfect candidate to ensure that Terengganu’s wealth trickles down to its folks.
The PAS vice-president claimed that there would be no major change if BN stays in power, but everything could change if PAS wins the by-election, resulting in a 16-16 tie of state seats between BN and Pakatan Rakyat (PR).
“This is a new angle in Kuala Besut that was not present during the recent general elections.
“Che Long will trigger a jump to get an equal position in the state assembly,” he said, referring to Azlan by his nickname.
A PAS win will see both BN and PR each holding 16 state seats resulting in a hung assembly in which case, Terengganu’s Sultan Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin would be obliged to choose the new mentri besar whom he believes to command the confidence of the majority of the assembly.
PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang is believed to enjoy a cordial relationship with the palace and support from Terengganu residents — two factors that may tip the scale in the party’s favour.
Azlan will face BN’s Tengku Zaihan Che Ku Abdul Rahman in a straight fight after nomination was closed today.
The Kuala Besut by-election will be held on July 24. The state seat has 17,679 registered voters.

“Che Long will trigger a jump to get an equal position in the state assembly,” PAS vice president Husam Musa, the director of the by-election campaign for his party, told reporters on Friday.
Obvious T'ganu folk want change
He was referring to PAS candidate Azlan Yusof, a popular businessman well known in the constituency of 17,679 registered voters.
According to Husam, if Kuala Besut voters continued to vote for BN, there would be no change as the state was already led by the coalition.
However, if PAS won Kuala Besut, the power equation in the entire state government could change as the state assembly was now only slightly in the BN's favor.
During the May 5 election, BN controversially claimed victory over 17 seats in the 32-seat state assembly while PAS held the balance 15. If PAS wins Kuala Besut, it would tie 16-16 with the BN, and the final decision on who would be the Mentri Besar or chief minister left to the Sultan.
Husam also said from the close outcome in the general election, it was clear Terengganu folk had tried to vote for change, otherwise the result would not be so narrow. He also blamed vote-rigging and cheating for BN's wafer-thin victory.
Show your support for Idris Jusoh, vote for PAS!
Another factor that may also bolster PAS' chances is that the constituency is part of former Terengganu chief minister Idris Jusoh's Besut stronghold.
Idris is now the Education Minister II. His bitter infighting with his Umno colleague Ahmad Said, the current chief minister, is well-known.
Husam called on Kuala Besut folk to show 'loyalty' to Idris by voting against for PAS. This would teach Ahmad, whom Husam described as "“a man with no political agenda”, a lesson and give Idris a "political boost".
“This is a new angle in Kuala Besut that was not present during the recent general elections (when voters only decided on whether they wanted Pakatan or BN)," said Husam.
“PAS will help them (idris Jusoh followers) take care of Ahmad Said. Before this they (the Idris camp) cannot unseat him from mentri besar because he was too strong. With a PAS win, we get a seat, Idris will get political boost.”
Idris had earlier this week promised to bury the hatchet with Ahmad Said to ensure a BN victory at Kuala Besut.
PAS candidate Azlan will face Umnos Tengku Zaihan Che Ku Abdul Rahman, a former civil servant, in a straight fight due to be balloted on July 24.
