'Teachers unprofessional if pupil bullying claim is true'

It will indeed be a disservice to a noble profession if teachers were berating a SK Seri Pristana pupil whose mother revealed the school's use of a shower room as the canteen for the pupils, Wanita MCA chairperson Yu Chok Tow said today.

"If indeed teachers are berating the child in the school as reported, they have degraded a very noble profession by using these antics that verge on reprisals against a completely innocent child...

mca wanita agm 201012 yu chok tow 02"The role of teachers is to import moral values and not abuse their authority to single out a nine-year-old girl for victimisation," Yu (right) said in a statement today.

The mother, Guneswari Kelly, is reported to have complained that her daughter was depressed as fellow students were teasing her while teachers were berating her for the revealing the use of the shower room as the canteen for pupils.

Guneswari had uploaded pictures of the pupils being made to eat in the washroom on Facebook and this sparked public outrage against the school.

‘Act against the threats’
Yu also condemned the series of threats directed at both the school and the complainant after the incident came to light on July 23.

"The issue began purely as a hygiene matter which affects all pupils, irrespective of creed, yet this photo has evolved into alleged kidnapping and vandalism threats against the whistleblower as well as the headmaster - all completely unacceptable.

"All parties must desist at once and let the Education Ministry to continue with its probe. Primarily, education and inculcation of virtues, not retribution, must be taught," she said.

Meanwhile, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng also condemned the death threats against both Guneswari and SK Seri Pristana headmaster Mohamad Nasir Mohd Noor.

"Such violent threats are criminal wrongdoings and completely against the Malaysian culture of rational, reasoned and objective solutions towards problem-solving," Lim said.

Lim, who is also Penang chief minister, said he hoped the police would take immediate action on the threats.
