Is ‘MO1' defused as political ammunition?

A month ago, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) had announced to the world that it had filed a civil suit to seize assets worth almost US$1 billion belongs to three persons namely, Riza Aziz, Jho Low and Khadem Al-Qubaisy. Recently, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) had reported that Khadem Al-Qubaisy has been arrested by Abu Dhabi’s authorities for allegedly being involved in fund embezzlement from 1MDB.
Of course, those who are familiar with this matter are well aware of the trio’s link with 1MDB and Najib Abdul Razak. But the mind-boggling question among the Malaysians is who is Malaysian Official 1 or MO1?
It is learnt that MO1 has been mentioned 36 times in the 136-page report drafted by DOJ for the forfeiture of the 1MDB linked assets ranging from expensive mansions to a Hollywood movie- proceeds. Not even once was Najib’s name mentioned in the report. But he started to draw flak claiming that he is the so-called MO1.
And now a group of mislead youngsters under the group called Gerakan Anak Muda Malaysia are set to rally on Aug 27 to pressure the authorities to identify and arrest MO1. Even a layman will know that we need evidences to arrest a suspect and produce him in the court.
So, what is the need for a rally to arrest a suspect who not even identified? What makes them jump the gun despite DOJ officials’ claim that the court proceedings pertaining to the civil suit against 1MDB would take ages to identify the real offender?
So, is this rally called #TangkapMO1 for real or are our confused youngsters being taken for a ride by some politicians for their political expediency? But as a netizen, one thing I noticed in the social media is that this rally is going nowhere and definitely a far cry from a large crowd. This is evident from the response its getting in the social media. No one has promised to come and join this rally in full force.
The organiding team has recently said that there would be about a 5,000-strong crowd at the rally, from all parts of Malaysia. This is highly doubtful, given the lukewarm support in the social media.
On the other hand, why don’t the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and the police just let them gather and see for themselves how much crowd are they going to draw. Moreover, they are claiming that it will be a peaceful assembly. So, I don’t see any issues in letting them gather and leave peacefully.
However, should they obviously drag Najib into this and claim that Najib is MO1 without any proof, then appropriate action should be taken against whomever exhibits such stupidity.
No doubt investigation over the alleged embezzlement of 1MDB’s fund has been initiated in Singapore, Switzerland, Abu Dhabi and the US. Is that because their authorities found something wrong with the Malaysian state-owned company? Not at all. It’s all because of a few of Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s men who made reports against 1MDB and Najib in the aforesaid states, just to create a brouhaha out of it and eventually oust a democratically-elected leader. - Mkini
