DAP rep: Sidek Kamiso arrest smacks of Gestapo tactics

The government should cease and desist from making use of police and Gestapo-like tactics to stifle free speech and harass dissidents, said a DAP MP over the early morning arrest of ex-journalist Sidek Kamiso over a Tweet.
"This entire episode reeks of a Gestapo-like era, in that the Umno-led ruling government uses the police to suppress any form of dissent to its administration, stifling free speech and other crucial provisions of a functioning democracy.
"We can now say that Malaysia is indeed a police state. And while I pledge solidarity with Sidek and his family, we must all come together to oppose this amoral statecraft," said Klang parliamentarian Charles Santiago.
He said this disregard for the rule of law is one of many things that Malaysians have no choice but to deal with, in addition to the abuse of power, rampant corruption, and the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal.
Santiago lamented the brutish nature and tactics of the arrest of the ex-journalist, for a tweet that allegedly insulted Islam.
"The police broke into his home, which he shares with his wife and two young children, in the early hours of the morning without a search warrant. The bully boys in blue uniform did not produce a warrant despite repeated requests by Sidek and his wife.
“This is atrocious and a flagrant abuse of power by the police. It only goes to demonstrate their high-handedness. Simply put, the police behaved like thugs as opposed to keepers of the law," opined the MP.
He also questioned why the ex-journalist's family was yet to be informed of Sidek's whereabouts, adding that it made no pick him up from his home in Petaling Jaya, and produce him in a courthouse in Johor Bahru.

"What is even more shocking is a tweet by police chief, Khalid Abu Bakar, commending the hooliganism by his officers," added Santiago.
Sidek was arrested in the wee hours of Monday morning by four cops who jumped his gate and secured entry into his house without a warrant.
This was supposedly because of his tweet regarding the passing of the late PAS spiritual advisor Haron Din, which has been claimed to insult Islam. - Mkini
