MP was grilled for four hours at Pattani Road police station in Penang.
GEORGE TOWN: Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi was released on police bail after he was detained for investigation into his “adios” tweet bidding farewell to the late PAS spiritual leader, Haron Din.
Ooi was questioned for four hours and left the Pattani Road police station at 6.30pm.
He had earlier turned himself in voluntarily at 2.30pm. He did not speak to reporters as he left the building.
Ooi’s lawyer, R S N Rayer, said police had wanted his client to head to the Serdang district police headquarters in Bandar Kinrara, Puchong, yesterday to have his statement recorded.
Rayer said, however, police then asked Ooi to report at the Pattani Road police station in George Town instead.
Rayer added that Ooi was questioned for four hours and his client had extended his full cooperation.
Rayer said the case would be investigated for causing disharmony, disunity, or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill will, or prejudicing the maintenance of harmony or unity, on grounds of religion under the Penal Code (Section 298A, Penal Code).
He added Ooi would also be investigated under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or network service (Section 233 CMA 1998).
Meanwhile, Northeast District Police Chief ACP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said Ooi was met by officers from Kuala Lumpur’s Dang Wangi police department at the Patani Road police station at 2.45pm today.
Mior added that several other police reports were also lodged against Ooi from the Northeast district and were subsequently referred to the policemen from Dang Wangi.
Ooi courted controversy when he re-tweeted a former journalist’s tweet with the caption: “Adios, Harun Din. Let there be peace” on Friday.
Haron Din, PAS’ spiritual leader, passed away while receiving treatment at a teaching hospital in California, United States. He slipped into a coma after suffering from heart complications. He was 76.
Former The Star journalist Sidek Kamiso was later detained by police and investigated for a tweet that was deemed insulting to Islam. However, the magistrate’s court in Johor Bahru did not allow a remand order and he was then released.
According to Ooi, he had removed the offending tweet, after Kamiso contacted him and asked him to do so.
Police then summoned Ooi to give his statement with Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar warning that they would go after Ooi if he did not come forward.
DAP has since distanced itself from Ooi’s tweet issue, with Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng describing it as insensitive.
