PUTRAJAYA: Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak said today that the opposition should just end their unnecessary debate on the government’s BR1M programme.
He was responding to the recent disagreement between opposition parties over the government’s cash aid programme, which eventually led to Prime Minister Najib Razak labelling Dr Mahathir Mohamad as a “U-turn” champion over the opposition’s changing stance on BR1M.
“We have said that BR1M is the best programme to help the needy. It also helps a lot in boosting the local economy.
“I hope that with this explanation, we won’t raise the issue of BR1M anymore,” Salleh said.
Salleh was speaking to reporters after signing a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on Information and Communications between Malaysia and Japan.
Mahathir, who had previously called BR1M a form of bribery, recently said that he would “institutionalise” BR1M by calling it a “statutory aid” instead.
On Dec 25 last year, the former prime minister said that BR1M was tantamount to corruption and was therefore illegal and could be considered as a crime.
A few days later, Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali concurred with the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman, saying that BR1M is a form of political bribery and that it did not empower the people.
Yesterday, Azmin too, said that if Pakatan Harapan wins the next general election (GE14), BR1M would be converted into a statutory aid.
Meanwhile, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng also said yesterday that BR1M isn’t a form of bribery if it was distributed by a clean and corruption-free government.
The BR1M cash aid ranges from RM450 to RM1,200 for those who qualify, depending on their marital status and monthly household income. -FMT
