THE 2 FACES OF NAJIB – VAIN & TREACHEROUS: SPENDING A BOMB ON INVITING THE WORLD BUSINESS ELITE TO KL WON’T HELP, HUDUD WILL KILL MALAYSIA

PM Najib could have been the busiest man in the whole of KL two days ago, attending the Global Transformation Forum:(GTF), meeting elite business leaders from around the world, and then jointly launching the Digital Free Trade Zone (DFTZ) with China’s Jack Ma, and then summoning the leaders of BN parties to talk about RUU355.
Talking about the multitasking ability of a government leader, Najib is definitely one of his kind.
But, this is not what I wanted to stress here.
Having witnessed his multitasking competency, perhaps we should take a deeper look into the nature of these tasks.
First and foremost, inviting the elites of the world — people from World Bank chief economist Dr Paul Romer, Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson, motivation guru Chris Gardner, “flying man” Usain Bolt, etc. — to Kuala Lumpur is not going to be cheap, but it will demonstrate to the world Malaysia’s sincerity in learning from the world and upgrading itself.
The DFTZ is not what one should conveniently overlook. If the initiative is carried out conscientiously, it should give the country an edge to be in the center of regional electronic commerce. With the endorsement of Alibaba’s Jack Ma, a substantial plan has been outlined, and is all ready to take off in a big way.
For so long Malaysia has been stuck in the ranks of middle-income countries. Coupled with the sliding international oil prices and ringgit exchange rates, the pressure upon the government has been mounting. If this new growth area could be exploited, and from the e-commerce sector to spearhead the growth of our logistics industry as well as processing, innovation and management capabilities, a major breakthrough will be on the horizon.
This new industry will allow our young people to have expanded opportunities to start and develop their careers. Indeed, young generation Malaysians in general have plenty to grumble about life. Many say they don’t see the future of this country. However, once we provide them the space to advance their ambitions, their attitude and mentality will change for the better.

This is the way towards a more positive disposition, modernization as well as internationalization, something everyone can really look forward to.
Unfortunately at the same time the PM was also summoning the leaders of BN component parties for a meeting to promote his “amended” RUU355.
It is learned that Umno’s version of RUU355 amendment bill only shows some minor changes from Hadi Awang’s version, specifying that it is only applicable to West Malaysian Muslims and marginally toning down the upper limits of punishments laid out in the original version.
Umno’s RUU355, while appearing slightly less rigid than the old one in a bid to soften the antagonistic stance of non-Muslims in the country, nevertheless retains much of its nature, hardly convincing enough to the non-Muslim community that it is completely devoid of its religionization agenda nor shedding the hudud shadow lurking at the back.
Umno’s so-called changes are but technical adjustments. Non-Muslims’ concern has stemmed from the fear that religious agenda can legitimately make its way into the core of the country’s administrative system once the amendment bill is adopted, eventually giving rise to a theocratic governing model.
What I was trying to say is that Najib is putting himself at the fork of two contradictory ways, uncertain which way he should steer the nation to.
He wants to put Malaysia on the world map, wants our people to embrace modern thinking. So he invited the cream of the global community to share their experiences with the country.
He wants to propel our economic development and deliver the country out of the middle-income bottleneck into the league of developed states. So he invited Jack Ma to help set up DFTZ.
But at the same time, he is not quite ready to part with PAS and RUU355. He plans to work with the Islamist party to win the coming elections.
The natural outcome of such cooperation is steeper Islamization and conservatization, which invariably contradict modernization and internationalization.
How will he choose in the end? To satisfy his temporal political needs, or the long-term development of this country?
He must make a decision, and we have to help him make one.
