Judge orders Vishnu Moorthy Raja Singgam to have electronic monitoring device installed around his ankle for another 59 days.
KUALA LUMPUR: A man who was detained under the Prevention of Crime Act (Poca) to facilitate investigations related to a foreign exchange investment scam, has finally been freed after being held for almost two months.
Salesman Vishnu Moorthy Raja Singgam was released at the Sessions Court here today, as his 59-day detention had come to an end.
Deputy public prosecutor Nabilah Ahmad Poad informed the court today that the Prevention of Crime Board has not made a decision on whether to extend the detention for two more years, put Vishnu under restricted residence or order his freedom.
Sessions Court judge Shamsudin Abdullah ordered Vishnu to have an electronic monitoring device (EMD) installed around his ankle for the next 59 days until July 22, as required under law.
“Do not take out or damage the device, or else you will face prosecution,” Shamsudin said.
Besides that, the court also ordered Vishnu to report to the police twice a week (Monday and Thursday).
Vishnu has been placed under Poca detention since March 29 as part of an investigation into a forex investment scheme. His detention was further extended to 38 days on April 18.
He sought to challenge his detention orders through reviews of the court’s decision to allow Poca detention and habeas corpus applications, but failed.
In a statement on March 29, Bukit Aman commercial crime investigation department (CCID) chief Acryl Sani Abdullah said six people were nabbed over the Venus FX forex scheme syndicate that had allegedly cheated 23,000 investors of RM80 million.
Six people were subsequently arrested and held under Section 3(1) of Poca.
Former MIC leader, R Ramanan also lodged a police report against a “Datuk Seri and his wife” who were said to own the forex investment company.
Speaking to reporters after Vishnu’s release, his wife A Magaswarie, who is seven-months pregnant, said she was still not happy at all although her husband was now out of detention.
“He was only released under bail. And now he has to wear a monitoring device.
“Why put him under so much torture for the past two months?” she asked. -FMT
