PETALING JAYA: DAP’s Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng has been asked to apologise to multi-level marketing company MonSpace (M) Sdn Bhd.
The letter of demand was issued to him by Messrs Shafee & Co, The Star Online reported.
It said Lim was also asked to withdraw statements made against MonSpace (M) Sdn Bhd, its chief executive officer and executive director Jessy Lai, who holds a “Datuk Seri” title, and former inspector-general of police Musa Hassan.
The daily said Lim was asked to make a public statement within seven days, upon receipt of the letter.
He was also asked to provide written assurance and undertaking that he would not further publish his remarks or any similar article about the company.
“Our clients, have suffered injury to its/his/her image and reputation, especially among their customers and the general public as a result of the defamatory statements made by you,” the letter dated May 24 said, according to the news portal.
According to the letter, Lim had made remarks that Musa had paid fees to government officers to keep MonSpace “protected”.
When contacted, Lim confirmed to the daily that he had received the letter of demand and that his lawyers would deal with it.
Yesterday, Lai responded to allegations that the organisation was involved in illegal investment schemes, saying that it was not an investment company.
“We are not an investment company. Rather, we are an e-commerce company, like Lazada or TaoBao.
“You can go to our webpage and purchase our products from there, which is our main business,” she said.
Lai also denied allegations that Musa was linked to MonSpace. She said Musa was only the president of MonSpace Net Inc, which had no direct links with MonSpace Corporation.
“He is the president of MonSpace Net Inc, which is the listed company.
“In regard to all the MonSpace companies in Malaysia, he is not involved in any of these.”
On Monday, 19 Chinese nationals filed police reports against MonSpace for allegedly tricking them into investing in a money scheme guaranteeing huge returns which never materialised.
This came after news broke that MonSpace was listed on Bank Negara Malaysia’s (BNM) Financial Consumer Alert list.
BNM said the list consisted of 291 companies and websites which were neither authorised nor approved under the relevant laws and regulations administered by it.
Yesterday, Lim invited Lai to take legal action against him and several other DAP representatives if the company was indeed involved in legal activities, as the founder alleged.
“We want solid proof that they (MonSpace) are running a legal business and are indeed a listed company in the US, as they have claimed.
“I also demand that they provide proof that they have a banking licence in China.” -FMT
