Putrajaya denies appointing ex-Trump aide as lobbyist

Putrajaya has denied appointing Healy Baumgardner-Nardone, a former aide to US President Donald Trump, to carry out lobbying activities.
“We always welcome friends from around the world who rightly point out that Malaysia has a successful business-friendly economy open to trade and investment, and is a moderate Muslim-majority country which, under Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's leadership, is a firm partner in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
“However, contrary to recent media reports and a registration statement, neither the Prime Minister's Office nor government of Malaysia has instructed, appointed or contracted in any form with the Godfrey Group Ltd, the 45 Group or Healy Baumgardner-Nardone,” said Najib's press aide Tengku Sariffuddin Tengku Ahmad in a media statement.
Yesterday, PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli had claimed that US Department of Justice (DOJ) records showed the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) had purportedly engaged Baumgardner-Nardone for a fee of US$250,000 (RM1.125 million) on May 19.
Lobbyists acting for foreign countries in the US are required by law to submit details to the DOJ. A copy of Baumgardner's was furnished to the media by Rafizi.
According to the document, Baumgardner's was to provide government relations and public relations services to her client.
Urging the government to explain the matter, Rafizi had asked if the appointment was related to cases involving the prime minister's personal interest.
The PKR leader also wanted Najib to reveal who was behind "Godfrey Group Limited", which was listed as the intermediary for the office of the PMO.
According to the DOJ document, Godfrey Group was located in Taman Molek, Johor Bahru.
Rafizi said checks with the Companies Commission of Malaysia revealed that the nearest match was one Godfrey Enterprise, registered to one Lim Boon Hoo in the same Taman Molek neighbourhood.

According to US-based news website The Daily Beast, Baumgardner is the latest among Trump's circle to cash in on their connections with the president through this deal with Malaysia.
She is described as a veteran political operative and formerly part of the Bush-administration.
She resigned from Trump's communications team last September but maintains good ties with her former colleagues who are now in the White House.- Mkini
