Uber told to review screening of drivers urgently

The Land Public Transport Commission (Spad) will not hesitate to impose punitive measures against e-hailing service operators or their drivers besides seizing their vehicles if they are to violate the law.
Spad, in a statement, today also recommended that Uber reviewed the screening of their drivers urgently.

Referring to the case involving an Uber driver who allegedly robbed a female passenger in Puchong on Sunday, that even though the incident was classified as a crime under the jurisdiction of the police, it said Spad viewed the matter seriously.
“When the e-hailing regulation is approved by Parliament (expected in July 2017), e-hailing service operators will be obliged to adopt safety standards and the highest quality of service,” said the statement, adding that all e-hailing operators must register with Spad under the proposed amendments to the Land Public Transport Act 2010.
The commission also commended the police for their swift action in arresting the 22-year-old driver to facilitate further investigation and it would give full cooperation if necessary.
