PETALING JAYA – Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has given his approval for the three PAS executive councillors to remain in the state government until the next general election.
In a statement issued by the Sultan’s private secretary Datuk Munir Bani on Thursday, the Selangor Sultan said that the position of the three PAS exco members should remain for the betterment of the people and in efforts to develop the state.
“His Royal Highness has taken into consideration the mandate given by the people to the current state government to continue to lead the state and ensure that peace, harmony and development can be achieved,” the statement said.
The state was hit by a political crisis when the Selangor PAS leadership decided that all its 13 assemblymen would quit the state government if Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali caves in to pressure from his Pakatan Harapan partners to isolate the Islamist party.
Azmin had said that it was status quo in the Selangor administration with the three PAS leaders remaining as executive councillors, adding that the priority was to focus on stability and the next general election.
This comes after the PAS Syura Council at its meeting endorsed the decision made by the party’s muktamar to end political ties with PKR.
The Selangor Palace also confirmed that Azmin met with the Sultan of Selangor to discuss the issue.
“His Royal Highness had also met with the state PAS commissioner, who is also the Sabak exco member, along with the three PAS exco members to get their stand on the matter,” the statement said.
The Selangor Ruler believes that Azmin still enjoys the confidence as the Mentri Besar since he was appointed in September 2014.
The Sultan also urged all parties not to speculate on the stability of the state government.
“His Royal Highness also hopes that since the fasting month is near, all the people of Selangor especially Muslims, should focus on preparations to face Ramadan and avoid engaging in slander and accusations,” the statement said.
