Teresa Kok: DAP re-election set for Sept 10 may be postponed

DAP vice-president Teresa Kok said that the party's leadership re-election, which was proposed to be held on Sept 10, might have to be postponed.
The election can only be held after the Registrar of Societies (ROS) issues the DAP an official notice approving the date.
Following a meeting with ROS director-general Mohammad Razin Abdullah yesterday, Kok said they were told that the letter of notice would be given in "a day or two".
"We need time to send letters to all our delegates. We are eager to have the party election on Sept 10, but we have to wait for the letter, today or tomorrow, from the ROS - or we will have to postpone the election date," she told a press conference at the DAP headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.
At the meeting yesterday, Kok said, the ROS accepted the "independent body" that the DAP had appointed to monitor the election.
Kok also confirmed that they have invited the ROS to monitor the re-election.
"And they have also given some suggestions, and we told them some things can be done and some others cannot be carried out," she said.
The Seputeh MP also took the opportunity to express her dissatisfaction with the ROS for having instructed the DAP to hold a re-election for the second time.
She also said it was important for them to come and monitor the exercise.
The DAP first held its election for the 2013-2016 term of its Central Executive Committee on Dec 15, 2012.
However, there were concerns over the legitimacy of the election due to an excel sheet error, prompting the DAP to hold a re-election on Sept 29, 2013.

On July 7, almost four years after the re-election, the ROS announced that the "repeat election" was also not valid, claiming that there were "qualified delegates" who were not allowed to vote and those who were "not qualified" to vote took part in the election.
The DAP denied this, claiming that the decision of the ROS was based on "fake news" but agreed to hold another re-election to safeguard the party's legality.
However, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng had said that the party also intends to sue the ROS over the decision. - Mkini
