Allow flight attendants to wear headscarves, Nazri says

PARLIAMENT | Muslim flight attendants from Malaysia Airlines (MAS) should be allowed to wear headscarves, Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz told the Dewan Rakyat today.
Nazri’s statement comes amid the controversial headscarf ban at the front desk of certain hotels, which he and others in Putrajaya had voiced their objection to.
The right to not be discriminated against on the grounds of religion is a basic right enshrined in the Federal Constitution, he said during the winding up of the committee stage Budget 2018 debate.
"Anything that is stipulated in the Constitution cannot be negotiated and compromised. Cannot do (MAS cannot issue the ban), simple as that," he said.

Nazri (photo) was responding to Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PAS-Bachok) who pointed out that flight attendants from MAS had made the request to be able to wear headscarves at work.
"There were requests from flight attendants from MAS, they want to wear headscarves, they want to tutup aurat (cover parts of the body as recommended in Islam), what is your view?" Ahmad Marzuk had asked.
Pressed more on the headscarf ban in certain hotels, Nazri said he did not entirely blame international hotel chains for such policies, despite his previous vocal objections to the policy.
"I expressed my regret with the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH), I don’t blame these international chains because they are foreigners which operate hotels in our country," he noted.
The minister added, however, that such hotels should not claim that the ban is standard operating procedure.
MAH president Samuel Cheah had been quoted as stating that the uniform policy has been practised in international hotel chains for a long time.- Mkini
