Viet ‘Datuk’ charged over RM350k bribe to release fishing boats

The 41-year-old Vietnamese “Datuk” who was remanded last week for allegedly offering bribes to Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) officers to release detained fishing boats, was charged in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today.
Tran Thi Mai, who is also known as Maimunah, was charged with two counts of bribing an MMEA director to the total of RM350,000.
She is said to have met Sedili MMEA director Amran Daud at the Parkroyal Hotel in Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur in May.
Tran is accused of paying Amran through a middleman, Mohammad Sani Abdullah, to secure the release of three Vietnamese fishing vessels – BWFSYA3, KNF7636 and ALYA 5 – which were caught in Malaysian waters.
Tran, who lives in Kuantan, also claimed trial to bribing Amran a further RM50,000 at the Pearl Point shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur later that month, to secure the release of the Vietnamese vessel KG 93397 TS.
She is represented by lawyer GK Sritharan, while deputy public prosecutor Wan Ahmad Nizam Wan Omar appeared for the prosecution.
The charge took place before Sessions Court judge Madihah Harullah.
Tran has been living in Malaysia for 17 years and is said to have obtained her datukship in Pahang.
Last week, it was reported that she had been remanded for six days and also charged at the Kuantan Sessions Court for offering bribes amounting to over RM800,000 to two MMEA officers.
She was alleged to have offered bribes in cash to a MACC officer acting as a “middleman” to be handed over to the MMEA officers on Nov 5.
Madihah fixed bail at RM250,000 with two sureties and ordered Tran to surrender her passport and report to the nearest police station in Kuantan every month.
The court also fixed Dec 20 for the next mention of the case.
