Johari: Gov’t looking at ways to tax Google, Facebook ads

PARLIAMENT | The government is conducting a number of studies to come up with a new mechanism to tax advertisements on Google and Facebook, said Finance Minister II Johari Abdul Ghani.
“These studies are to determine if there is a need to impose the tax.
“They will determine the use of any possible taxes and their impact,” he said during the closing debate on the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s speech in Dewan Rakyat today.
Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had previously said the proposal to impose the tax would be sent to the cabinet for consideration.
The idea of taxing Google and Facebook advertisements was first mooted at a luncheon Zahid attended with media editors and publication permit holders last week.
At the luncheon, Star Media Group managing director and CEO Wong Chun Wai made a pitch for the tax, claiming that the bulk of online media outlets’ digital advertising revenue went to Google and Facebook.
Wong also pointed out that a similar tax on the tech giants had been imposed in Vietnam.
Google Malaysia subsequently stated that it already pays all taxes it currently owes in the country.
"We pay all the taxes we owe in Malaysia, and we work regularly with the government on a range of issues," it said in a statement last week.
Johari also told the Dewan Rakyat today the government is examining studies on the taxation of e-commerce.
“The government is also examining in detail studies being carried out by OECD (Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development) on the taxation of the digital economy and related products,” he said. -Mkini
