Gani defends Mavcom's RM1 service charge

Former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail has defended the RM1 regulatory service charge (RSC) collected by the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) from all passengers departing from commercial airports across the country.
Gani, who was a former member of the steering committee that led to Mavcom's establishment, said the commission does important work as an independent regulator that protects the interests of air travellers.
This, he said, includes resolving complaints within 30 days, ensuring that passengers are not at the "mercy of commercial entities."
"I am sure consumers who have engaged Mavcom with their grouses will attest to the importance of having an independent commission to intercede on their behalf.
"For passengers to contribute RM1 only when departing from a Malaysian airport seems like a sound investment for peace of mind," Gani said in a statement.
This comes a day after a group known as the Malaysian Public Transport Users Association (4PAM), called on Putrajaya to suspend the RSC and to probe how Mavcom was using the funds it collected.
The RSC came into effect on May 1. The RM1 fee is included in airline ticket prices, except for those using rural air services in Sabah and Sarawak. - Mkini
